MEANINGFUL ENGAGEMENT RESOURCE GUIDE: EVIDENCE-BASED ACTIVITIES FOR OLDER ADULTS

Learning Objectives:

CHALLENGING THE AGE-DECLINE PARADIGM: NEW INSIGHTS FROM HIGH COGNITIVE RESILIENCE RESEARCH

1.    Summarize the key cognitive, genetic, and lifestyle factors associated with high cognitive resilience, drawing on findings from longitudinal studies of adults aged 80 and older with exceptional memory.

2.   Identify and apply emerging digital health markers with high ecological validity—for the understanding of health behaviours in high cognitive resilience and neurodegenerative diseases.

3.   Evaluate the role of interdisciplinary interventions—integrating physical, social, and cognitive strategies—in promoting high cognitive resilience and informing patient counselling for those in the older adult demographic.

MEANINGFUL ENGAGEMENT RESOURCE GUIDE: EVIDENCE-BASED ACTIVITIES FOR OLDER ADULTS

1.    Understand clinical best practice tools from the Meaningful Engagement Resource Guide to create personalized non-pharmacological engagement strategies for older adults living with dementia and complex mental health conditions.

2.   Identify tailored meaningful engagement activities to reflect a person’s preferences, strengths, abilities and life history, supporting emotional well-being, social connection, and reducing responsive behaviours/personal expressions.

3.   Apply practical approaches to embedding meaningful engagement into daily care routines to enhance quality of life while reducing reliance on chemical or physical restraints.
